105 DCLL students eagerly welcomed the activity-packed Second Semester following the first General Assembly titled ‘MAGSTORYA TA, KA-SOLARES!: a discourse unfiltered’ of the second half of A.Y. 2023-2024 by the Societas Lingua Artes (SOLARES) held at the SAS Viewing Room at the Philip Van Engelen Building last Saturday, February 3, 2024.

 

The DCLL Sub-Organization presidents discussed the benefits and responsibilities of the members of their organisations and the consequences of their failure to comply with the established rules. 

 

Pulong sa mga Alagad sa Obra (PALABRA) President Jason Yntig announced two upcoming Valentines Event both titled Lovefest, one in collaboration with the Society of Language Enthusiasts (SOLE) and the Carolinian Communications Society (CCS), and another in partnership with the Carolinian Sociological  Anthropological Society (CARSAS). 

 

Yntig also teased the PALABRA Book Sale to be held during SAS Week in March as well as the return of the Owl’s Hollow Book Club in the same month. 

 

Carolinian Communications Society (CCS) President Ethan Dublin announced the upcoming CCS Logo Making competition where the winning entry would replace the official organisation’s logo. 

 

Dublin also stressed the need for more Graphic Designers to join their organisation citing the relevance to their course of media practitioners.

February 3, 2024 – Carolinian Communication (CCS) President Ethan Dublin (Right) discusses future plans for the second semester. 

Community Extension Service (CES) Department Head Ma’am. Fely M. Latras discussed the general directions and requirements of students looking to earn their CES hours citing the importance of a platform for Carolinians to do service to the community through two of the CES Programs; the Dear Tita Mercy radio show that provides real-life pieces of advice to anonymous letter senders looking for guidance, and the Tutorial for Bonita Girls program that is dedicated to tutoring young girls who were victims of past traumatic abuse. 

 

CES point person Kristoffer Andrei Yu of BA-COMM presented the general CES orientation of Dear Tita Mercy noting the need to evenly distribute the episodes to all three DCLL programs to meet the proper CES hours required for all students of the department. 

 

Following a short break, the event culminated in a panel discussion which included Dr. Joseleanor Magno Mendoza, Dr. Charity Tecson Turano, Dr. Mary Ann Malimas, Ma’am Fely M. Latras, and DCLL Chairwoman Dr. Joanne Marisse Tan. The panelists engaged in a discussion of a series of questions that saw a wide variety of subjects such as gender roles in linguistics, inquiries into the DCLL education system, the various ways love is interpreted through the means of communication, and many more.

Department Chairwoman Dr. Joanne Marisse Tan concluded the discourse with a heartfelt closing remark congratulating the students for a successful event, citing the importance of communication as a powerful tool in fostering an environment where education thrives.
