International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

The 29th of November marks the 47th year anniversary of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. That very same day back in 1947, the General Assembly established the Partition Resolution. The resolution called for the creation of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State” in Palestine, with Jerusalem designated as a corpus separatum – (a separated body)-  under a unique international governance. However, to date, only one of these states has been established, which is Israel.

Not a lot of people are aware of the fact that Palestine has been under Israeli military occupation for more than 55 years since the Six-Day War in 1967, making it one of the longest-standing occupations in modern history. Over the past 75 years, significant numbers of Palestinians were displaced, with approximately 700,000 losing their homes during the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. These events have profoundly impacted the Palestinian population. Critics argue that the occupation and associated policies are evolving toward a system of legalized segregation solely based on race, depriving them of civil and political rights which is otherwise known as an apartheid—- a claim supported by several human rights organizations but strongly disputed by Israel.

The International Day of Solidarity serves as a reminder for the entire world to remember the ongoing unresolved status of the Palestinian issue, shining light on the fact that the Palestinian people have yet to achieve their fundamental rights, as outlined by none other than the General Assembly. These rights encompass the freedom to determine the Palestinians’ own future without outside interference, the establishment of national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and properties from which they were uprooted.

Maybe you’ve heard of the situation with the Palestinians and have grown conscious about buying from specific brands. Perhaps an ad has popped up on your phone and you felt too guilty to skip it.

Let today be a memento of how the struggle they are going through is reality- a reality that we can help change.
