USC Votes: SSC-COMELEC Releases Initial List of Candidates
STAND-USC Only Party to File Presidential Candidate

The University of San Carlos (USC) Supreme Student Council (SSC) Commission on Elections (COMELEC) released the initial list of candidates for the 2025 SSC elections on their Facebook page Monday, April 7, following an eleventh hour extension to the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy.

Despite the deadline extending all the way to 8AM on Monday, Marianne  “Maui” Cruz of the Student Alliance for Nationalism and Democracy – USC (STAND-USC) stands as the only presidential candidate for the SSC elections. The TINGOG Carolinian Party filed John Tyler Calderon as their vice-presidential candidate while STAND-USC filed Krishty Mapula as their VP bet.

STAND-USC filed 19 candidates for councilor, short of the 21 slots in the council, while TINGOG filed only six candidates for councilor.

The Student Power Party (SPP), returning from their 2024 hiatus, filed seven candidates for councilor only.

On Facebook, Maui Cruz remarked that students have been driven to organize in “broad alliances and mass protests” due to the “worsening political crisis in USC”, adding that “student elections […] is not the only way to express student democracy.” She says that STAND is proud to present its slate of 19 councilors with Krishty Mapula as her “co-standard bearer”. She concluded her statement declaring, “STAND continues its ceaseless and tireless struggle in this fight to reclaim student democracy. By the students, for the students!”

Meanwhile, John Tyler Calderon also posted on Facebook, “Truly, it is the passion to serve the students and making sure that their interests are always first in the agenda that will fuel the heart of a Hope Warrior. Best of luck, TINGOG, STAND, SPP, and COMELEC!”
