DCLL welcomed new blood as a new academic year started last August 11, 2025. In keeping with tradition, the University of San Carlos held Affinity 2025 throughout the week. Affinity Week is the university’s week of welcome for newly enrolled students for the academic year, starting with a welcome program on day 1 (August 11) held at the downtown campus, followed by a mix of activities at the department level.

Societatis Lingua Artes held this year’s academic orientation of the Department of Communications, Linguistics, and Literature at the Philip Van Engelen viewing room on Tuesday, August 12, as part of the affinity week activities officially welcoming the new batch of college students in the university.

The academic orientation saw the presence of DCLL faculty members as well as new and continuing DCLL students. The orientation featured a rundown of the rules and policies within the university, the department, and the organization (SOLARES). It also featured introductions from each of the sub-organizations CCS, SOLE and PALABRA, including HALANGDON, the official student publication of DCLL, which announced the opening of its applications running until September 14. SOLARES announced in the session that they were recruiting students to be a part of the Public Relations and External Synergies Desk (PRESD) and the Monetary and Finance Desk (MOFID). They also revealed the new forms for absences, tardiness, and semestral fee payments.

External organizations also presented their parts to recruit members into their own roster. The organizations include Tag Rugby, SAS Royale, SAS Bulletin, Warrior’s Arena, Today’s Carolinian, and USC All Access.

Towards the end of the orientation, Dr. Joanne Marisse Tan, the department Chairperson, announced that the first year communication students will have two separate schedules for each of their major subjects as the number of new COMM enrollees was nearing 50 students, exceeding the maximum allowable population for a single class of students.

The next major event from SOLARES will be the first general assembly for the academic year on September 5, 2025 where they will reveal more on what the organization has been cooking throughout the summer break.

The day after the academic orientation, the department held the Community Extention Services (CES) Orientation at the PE Viewing Room for new DCLL students and existing DCLL students who have yet to complete their CES hours.

The CES orientation was led by Mme. Fely Latras who was returning as the CES head for the department after a year away from the post. She was later joined by Mr. Darwin Goron, a member of the department’s CES Committee.

After Mme. Latras’s presentation, the SOLARES sub-organiztions (CCS, SOLE, and PALABRA) announced their CES activitites for the semester and recruited students to join their activites. The CES activities in the department include STEWCOMM, COMMarites Podcast, Pages & Threads, Heart & SOLE, and Tigom.

SOLARES and their sub-organizations (CCS, SOLE, and PALABRA) joined several other OSFA-registered organizations at the TC Basketball Court in setting up booths for affinity week. The booths were up from August 12 to August 14.

August 14

CCS and SOLE held their freshie orientations on the afternoon of the 4th day of Affinity week at the PE11 and PE15 classrooms respectively. The freshie orientations included an overview of their program’s prospectus and the teachers that handle their major classes. There were also some minigames and activities for the freshies to get along with a mini salo-salo to cap it all off.
