“She is just a woman.”
Not every milestone in history is remembered, as countless stories have faded into obscurity, so too the pain and triumph that defines the life a person has lived. In the case of women, for all their struggles, their pain and hard work, the burden of their own gender often drags them down from the spotlight.
Let us go back through history and open the heart-warming chapters of these women’s lives as we celebrate the very International Women’s Month with all the appreciation, gratitude and respect all the women in the world deserves.
Florence Nightingale
A woman with a strong heart for unyielding bravery.
Her faith brought her to extraordinary heights. Believing it was a ‘calling’ from God, she went on to become a nurse to serve, lead, and care for the poor and the sick.
Florence became a beacon of hope in a time of struggle. It was no easy place for a woman, where she had to work countless hours helping the sick, caring for the poor, even aiding thousands of soldiers from a war with so little supplies and equipment.
A woman of hope and faith
With the resolve of a soldier, her willingness to serve the sick and wounded earned her the title “The Lady with the Lamp”. She would tend her patients even in sleepless nights, with a lamp that shines as her selfless heart, alit with the hope and faith that someday their suffering will soon come to pass.
Although she has cared for thousands of patients and people who were in need, her time came when she succumbed to an incurable disease of the time. Florence may have passed on, her unyielding love still shines as bright as her lamp and she became an inspiration to all nurses following on her heart of bravery.
Anne Frank
An unyielding young heart in a time of terror that took her home.
Anneliese Marie Frank was a witness of Germany’s invasion of the Netherlands in World War 2. Fearing capture, she and her fellow survivors were forced into hiding. It was two years into the war when she was almost done with her diary, the very diary where she had documented everything. Her days are filled with anxiousness as the air of silence and uncertainty shrouds her home, occasionally broken by the sounds of gunshots and screams in the middle of harrowing nights that gave her nightmares.
But what could her diary be of significance?
Although she was just a teenager, I think of her as a brave woman. The horrors she endured would put even the strongest-willed people uneasy after reading her diary. It was not just a story about survival, but about a young woman fighting for her life in a time where evil and cruel men were put in power, and countless lives suffered for it.
This International Women’s Month, we should be reminded that a person is not brave just because they have faced their fears. They are brave because they have experienced these fears but chose to act.
Maria Ressa
A strong-willing woman who stands above all.
In many ways, a journalist’s job is seen as easy, a sentiment shared by people who never realize the struggles, frustrations, and pain of shouldering the responsibility of truth. This remains true to the struggles Maria Ressa has endured. The judgements and criticisms, emotional and mental abuses from all the hate, imprisonment due to accusations and disagreement of a well-known figure.
But what has she done to experience all of these?
In a time where the administration is rife with violence and uncertainty, she chose to stand with the truth, fearless to the consequences of doing so in such a regime. Her passion for journalism continues to inspire aspiring media practitioners to stand for the truth despite, and it is integrity that makes you strong.
Henerala Agueda Kahabagan
A leader from history who makes up our present.
Henerala Agueda was a Filipina who led the Filipino soldiers during two wars of Philippine history – the Revolutionary and the Philippine-American War. Her story amazes me because it is not just the fact that she led troops to battle in the wars, but it was because of her ability to lead.
It is no secret that women throughout history are put down simply because of being women. But Heneral Kahabagan was a different case, she was not only appointed to lead an army, but they recognized her merit as a military leader in par with her male contemporaries.
The International Women’s Month should not only be a celebration, but a reminder, and the love and appreciation to the accomplishments of women should be more than something we should continue to do even after the month has passed on.
