Sublimity in print.

Whether it was through his outspoken commentary on Cebuano Life in DYSS Super Radyo, his witty and fearless writing style in Sunstar Cebu, or his unwavering charisma on top of a voice that commanded respect at the GMA-7 Broadcast, Bobby Nalzaro was an icon that forever stands as an inspiration to all Cebuano journalists.

His 43 years of tireless public service began at the age of 16, as Pablito Galeza Nalzaro already knew his calling, becoming a young radio broadcaster at DXRZ Radio Station in Zamboanga City while still being a Mass-Communication student. On October 4, 1999, after resigning from his first broadcasting job in 1997, he became the TV News Anchor for Balitang Bisdak and so began the years that further cemented the television newscast and the name Bobby Nalzaro or Super Bobby as a household name that garnered a loyal audience through his commitment and integrity.

He became a leading figure in Cebuano Journalism, there was not a single person who had not heard of his name in one way or another, a testament to his passion that he would work tirelessly between an hour on Balitang Bisdak and three on his DYSS Radio station. For those who may have not seen nor listened to either, he was also a prolific columnist who wrote three days a week at the Sun Star Cebu.

Nalzarro began as a Broadcaster, but his passion for journalism grew to love the discipline of column writing. Bong O. Wenceslao, the former editor of his articles in English in Sun Star Cebu noted that Nalzarro would often write on his phone wherever he went, even acquiescing to SunStar management’s demands after a conflict if it meant he could write more.

His blunt way of speaking often comes into witty metaphors that aptly capture the state of whatever news is currently happening in Cebu. The wording, style, and delivery were all unfiltered and straightforward, but it was in the best interest of the Cebuano People. No matter the offense, be it political or economical, or how big the person he may come up against, he will write for the truth, and let that truth serve as a guidance to continually improve Cebu. On September 5, 2018, he wrote his opinion piece titled ‘Projecting a pro-poor image’ where he derided then Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña on his ‘pro-poor’ hypocrisy, as the mayor was recently accused as the ‘protector’ of an illegal butane refilling business. This was followed up a week later in a September 12, 2018 article titled ‘Mikakak man diay’ (Getting cold feet), he doubled down on Osmeña’s failure to keep his promise to address the allegations following a protest at the birth anniversary of his grandfather the late president Sergio Osmeña Sr. This all came to a point when Tomas Osmeña’s son, Ramon Miguel Osmeña whom Nalzaro alleged to be involved in the illegal Butane Business, filed two cases of libel against the journalist, only to be junked on December 6, 2019, by technicality because two articles do not necessarily need two cases of libel as they are seen as one. Ramon revived the case again which Nalzaro posted for Bail on September 12, 2020.

The Osmeñas were just one of the many enemies he has made, as Super Bobby himself once stated in an interview, he is never shy to get his hands dirty. It was a responsibility he readily accepted when he began his career as a journalist, and because of this he has been made a victim of jeers and serious jokes surrounding his absence December 2021, some say he was shot dead in his booth by a politician he wronged, some say he was ambushed among many other malicious things, but he revealed in an article a month later that it was due to hypertension. His broadcasting schedule had to change, and he went on doing what he loved. Unfortunately, he was laid to rest following multiple organ failures on March 17, 2022.

Bobby Nalzaro’s story was about a man whose passion carved his own place in the world of Journalism, despite everything, the name ‘Super Bobby’ stands amongst Ginnie Vamenta and SD Tecson as one of Cebu’s all-time Radio Broadcasters worth remembering. He is cemented as one of SunStar’s 25 of Cebu’s most influential people and for more than one good reason at that.
