To start the new academic year, the Societatis Lingua Artes (SOLARES) held their first-ever Academic Orientation last August 15, 2023, at the School of Arts and Sciences Open Theater. The orientation was attended by the students of the Department of Communication Linguistics and Literature (DCLL) from the freshmen to the seniors, together with the DCLL faculty members. This was mainly done to welcome all the students of the department, especially the freshmen, to a brand new school year and pump up their spirits for another year of learning. Many important matters were discussed during the program including the introduction of the different sub-organizations of SOLARES, as well as the department’s retention policy.

Mr. K-Jay Remoto, President of SOLARES

The assembly started off with a warm welcome from the SOLARES president, Mr. K-jay Remoto. He shared some words to welcome all the students, especially the freshmen and gave words of assurance that the DCLL community is a community where you could grow and find your identity. “We can be who we want to be.” Mr. Remoto quoted from the movie Barbie. He further added, “DCLL offers that chance to the students” and that it is “a place to find your voice and be heard.”

The current department chair, Mr. Kenneth Opina gladly introduced the faculty member of DCLL. Mr. Opina then continued to discuss the retention policy and reminded the students that it is not something to dread about. He stated that the policy is there not to bring the students down, but rather to maintain the excellent academic quality of the department and help inspire students to work hard and be the best version of themselves.

The different sub-organization of SOLARES was also introduced. The Carolinian Communication Society (CCS), The Society of Language Enthusiasts (SOLE), and Pulong sa mga Alagad sa Obra (PALABRA). In addition, programs including Stewards of Communication (StewComm) which is a Community Extension Service (CES) volunteer program, and other student organizations such as USC JPMAP, SAS Bulletin, HALANGDON, and SAS Cheer promoted and announced recruitment. Furthermore, an announcement for the recruitment of the Public Relations team for SOLARES has also been made.

Finally, the assembly was closed off by Ms. Marisse Tan, a faculty member from DCLL. She shared words that inspired the students to keep on going despite the challenges they may face. She quotes Marie Curie saying “ Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less”.

In an exclusive interview with the SOLARES president, Mr. K-jay Remoto, he says that he is very optimistic for the department this school year seeing that the members especially the freshmen are active; he further states that there is a lot to look forward to this school year as they made plans to improve further the student experience and the entire department in general.

Mr. Kenneth Opina shared in an interview that the purpose of the Academic Orientation is to bring out the students’ spirit of getting back to school and being aware of what goes on in the department.
