In honor of Valentine’s week, the SAS Council held the Lovefest Seminar on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 1:30–4:30 p.m. at the PE viewing room, themed as “Love to the Point of Creation,” it was inspired by the creation of rubber gloves.

The event showcased the works of creative artists and delved deeper into their creative process with the invitation of two guest speakers to talk about their knowledge, learnings, and experiences while working in the creative industry.

First guest speaker Liana San Diego of the School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (SAFAD) talked about her life as a singer-songwriter and how her passion for music helped launch her career into the music industry. San Diego also discussed her experiences in the music community to which she found amazing and mentioned her recently held concert.

Following next is Yume Marie Enriquez, also known as Tahlerna Bee, a drag queen and a former student from the School of Business and Economics at the University of San Carlos (SAFAD).

Enriquez talked about “Embracing the Art of Drag” and how it changed her life forever since she debuted as a drag queen, her segment discussed how the art of drag originated in the Shakespearean era, when women were prohibited from performing on stage and male actors had to cross-dress to play the role of women. It also became an expression of protest since it can also be a way to create a political statement, challenge gender roles, entertain, and find community.

“When I told my parents for the first time that I’d be debuting, dili gyud ko kabalo unsay nasa sulod sa ilang mga utok,” Enriquez recounted her uncertainty of becoming a drag queen because of her catholic upbringing, remembering an emotional moment when she was surprised to see a bouquet of flowers on her side table. “When I saw that bouquet, nihilak gyud ko ug maayo because that was such a big deal to me already and it made me feel that I was accepted by my family.”

Enriquez said that drag taught her about self-love and being enough, and there were things that she was good at as a performer, she also added that. “In order for your dreams to come true, you must manifest them and continue what you’ve started.”

The seminar concluded with a lesson that both San Diego and Enriquez took to heart; For things to happen, we must dream big, stay connected to our passions, and take that leap of faith.
