The
Fault
in Our Stars
In The Time of Sickness

Cancer is a peculiar thing, your body is a petri dish for testing different medical treatments and all you have to do is win the battle. I always wondered, after watching and reading a lot about cancer patients, what gave them so much strength to find love amidst the pain and challenges that they undergo everyday. Love can be unconditional and our own way of viewing it can carry a different meaning for many people. When I remember the stories of the people who fought cancer, “A Fault In Our Stars” by John Green comes to mind, a book published in 2012 and the movie was released in 2014 starring Shallene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. A tear-jerking story about two deep-thinking teens with cancer and it is one of the beloved young adult stories in recent history.

You would have never expected a cancer support group to be a romantic spot for the two lead characters to meet for the very first time, but that’s what happened to Hazel and Gus. Augustus Water is a former basketball player and lost his right leg to cancer. In Hazel, he recognizes the kindred spirit: a quick witted smart ass who can’t take any good platitudes. Augustus and Hazel’s shared love of reading inspires a trip to Amsterdam to seek a reclusive writer of Hazel’s favorite novel, “The Imperial Affliction” which is also another story about a woman with cancer. Bringing in the jolt of an alcohol-addled author and setting the scenario for their first shared kiss in front of an applauding tourist at the attic at Anne Frank’s house.

The novel encompasses a deep and poignant message that death is a natural part of life and every joyful moment in this world is fleeting, we know that bliss will never last. To borrow a line from Hazel’s favorite book: “Pain demands to be felt.” A phrase I remember when I choked up in tears reading the third act of John Green’s book. For every cancer patient that has suffered for a long time and measures it from one to ten, the pain of losing someone dear to you will always be the terrible ten. The Fault in Our Stars reminds us of every possibility in this world, and maybe, in another dimension where Augustus and Hazel were able to win their cancer battles; being the ordinary couple in the world who fought strongly if life will ever give them a chance. Just like real life people, they taught us to always look at the rainbow after the rain.
