Sublimity in print.

When I give my heart out to someone and they turn it down
I often take a moment to look at it
I saw the scars that were once deep cuts that fully healed
The broken pieces that I so desperately glued back together
And the bruises that never left its mark
It looks ugly, it looks beaten, but it has always been mine.

It could have seen better days
But it has always beaten through worse
You would think it would last
But now it gives out first
What good is one’s heart if it has lost its soul
When it has lost its beauty and it’s less than a whole
And now it looks ugly, now it looks beaten, but it has always been mine.

As I put my heart right back to where it belongs
I often take a moment to feel it
I thank it for the work it has done
And I appreciate the effort it took to keep me alive
But what good is a life if it is lived through suffering
For a heart so blue it cannot stand more toughening
Now it looks ugly, and now it looks beaten, and yet it has always been fine.

As it continues to help my body function
One thing remains for certain
My heart is strengthened by tension
Carrying the aches from a name it yearned to mention
My heart continues to beat with the pain learned from its lessons
And now it looks ugly, now it looks beaten, and yet it has always been kind.
