On September 23, the Department of Communications, Linguistics and Literature (DCLL) hosted an online Press Freedom Week Talk in commemoration of Cebu’s 31st Press Freedom Week, with the title, “Through the Watchdog’s Eyes: Involvement and Challenges.”

SOLARES President K-jay Remoto began the event with his opening remarks, highlighting the challenges of the current social media news landscape with the rampant biases found all throughout.

Publication Adviser Dr. Justy P. Tuquib of the official student publication of the University of San Carlos SHS STEM, Warrior’s Ink, shared his expertise in campus journalism as he opened the discussion on how media companies crossed the line on their functions as media?

Dr. Tuquib prefaced his talk citing the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, emphasizing the importance of campus journalism. He further tackled that, “as a campus journalist it’s not always about us being there in the editorial board. It’s about us amplifying the universal right of the students of information, freedom of speech and criticism.”

He then went on to highlight that a student publication’s commitment to the truth, that for a student publication to operate effectively it must not have any ties to its student body. Apart from reaffirming the values and ideals of what a student publication should be, Dr. Tuquib also shared his knowledge on how to capture feature stories found throughout the school campus that can catch the attention of Carolinians, highlighting that is important for a student publication to always be in touch with the community it is part on.
